WAFCON 2026: Malawi Stun Super Falcons in Historic Win

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have suffered a major setback in their quest for a record-extending 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title after losing 3-2 to tournament debutants Malawi in a thrilling Group C encounter.

The defeat marked a disappointing start for the defending champions, who arrived at the competition with high expectations after securing their 10th continental crown last year.

The match started cautiously, with both teams struggling to break the deadlock as the first half ended without a goal.

However, the second half turned into a dramatic contest as Malawi produced a stunning performance against the African giants.

Malawi made history when Temwa Chawinga scored the country’s first-ever WAFCON goal, beating Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie to put the debutants ahead.

Nigeria responded with attacking pressure and introduced Toni Payne in the 55th minute as coach Justin Madugu searched for a way back into the game.

But Malawi remained composed and extended their lead in the 73rd minute with another impressive strike before adding a third goal to take control of the encounter.

The Super Falcons mounted a late comeback attempt, with captain Rasheedat Ajibade converting a penalty in the 90th minute to reduce the deficit.

In stoppage time, Uchenna Kanu scored Nigeria’s second goal, but Malawi held on to secure a famous 3-2 victory.

The result represents a historic moment for Malawi and a warning sign for Nigeria, who are aiming to defend the title they won in Morocco last year.

Super Falcons coach Justin Madugu had earlier acknowledged the challenge of retaining the trophy, warning that every opponent would be determined to defeat Nigeria, the most successful team in WAFCON history.

With crucial group matches against Zambia and Egypt still ahead, Nigeria must quickly recover and improve their performance if they hope to keep their championship ambitions alive.
