Own Goal Denies Egypt Historic Win as Belgium Fight Back in Seattle Thriller

Egypt were left agonisingly close to a first-ever World Cup victory after a second-half own goal handed Belgium a 1–1 draw in their Group G opener in Seattle.

The seven-time Africa Cup of Nations champions had stunned the European side in the 21st minute when Emam Ashour unleashed a powerful 20-yard strike into the bottom corner beyond Thibaut Courtois to give the Pharaohs a deserved lead.

Backed by a lively support in the United States’ west coast, Egypt national football team looked sharp and almost doubled their advantage before halftime, but Courtois denied a drilled effort from Mostafa Zico.

Captain Mohamed Salah also came close after the break, heading goalwards only to be denied again by the Belgian goalkeeper, while Ashour failed to convert the rebound.

However, the game turned in the 66th minute after Belgium boss Rudi Garcia introduced Romelu Lukaku. Moments later, Thomas Meunier’s low cross was turned into his own net by Mohamed Hany under pressure, bringing Belgium level.

The equaliser shifted momentum firmly towards Belgium national football team, with Kevin De Bruyne striking the post from a free-kick as they pushed for a winner.

Egypt, despite their proud history in African football, have now gone eight World Cup matches without a win since their debut in 1934, managing only their third draw in the tournament’s history.

The result leaves Belgium to face Iran in Los Angeles next, while Egypt take on New Zealand in Vancouver as both sides continue their Group G campaign.
