Tinubu upgrades federal polytechnic nasarawa to university

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the transformation of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa, in a move aimed at boosting technical education and strengthening Nigeria’s capacity in the solid minerals sector.
The approval, according to the Presidency, is part of the administration’s commitment to developing skilled manpower, promoting innovation and creating specialised institutions that support Nigeria’s industrialisation drive under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The decision followed a proposal presented by Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District, who highlighted the need for a specialised university that would harness the economic potential of Nasarawa State’s rich mineral deposits and contribute to the country’s drive for economic diversification.
With the upgrade, the institution is expected to become a major centre for training, research and technological development in key areas including mining engineering, mineral exploration, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing, energy technologies and other emerging fields.
The new university will focus on producing highly skilled graduates, researchers and industry experts who will support Nigeria’s efforts to add value to its mineral resources locally, reduce dependence on imported expertise and promote sustainable mining practices.
A statement by Presidential Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, said the approval demonstrates President Tinubu’s determination to align Nigeria’s higher education system with the country’s development priorities by creating institutions that address critical economic needs.
Onanuga noted that specialised universities such as the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa, will play a key role in driving innovation, industrial growth and technological advancement while providing opportunities for young Nigerians to acquire relevant skills for the future economy.
The President has directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other relevant government agencies to commence the required administrative and legislative processes to ensure the successful conversion of the polytechnic into a specialised federal university.
The upgrade is expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s position as a major player in the global mining industry while supporting the government’s efforts to unlock the value of the nation’s vast solid mineral resources.
