Catholic Church mourns as Archbishop Augustine Akubeze dies at 69

The Catholic Church in Nigeria has announced the death of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, who passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at the age of 69.

The announcement was contained in an official In Memoriam statement issued by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and signed by its Secretary General, Rev. Fr. Michael A. Banjo.

The Church described Archbishop Akubeze as a devoted shepherd, a servant leader, and a man who dedicated his life to the spiritual growth and welfare of God’s people.

According to the statement, the late Archbishop believed that the true development of the Church went beyond spiritual renewal, stressing the importance of the holistic growth and wellbeing of the faithful.

During his years as Archbishop of Benin City, the Archdiocese witnessed significant progress, with the late prelate placing strong emphasis on the formation and welfare of priests, whom he regarded as vital to the future of the Church.

The CBCN also paid tribute to his role as a former President of the Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, describing him as a strong voice for truth and a defender of the teachings of the Church.

The statement noted that Archbishop Akubeze’s episcopal motto, “Ut Testimonium perhibeam veritati” — meaning “That I may bear witness to the Truth” — reflected his commitment to faith, service, and integrity.

He was remembered as a compassionate and humble leader whose authority came not from power but from service, patience, generosity, and deep spirituality.

The Catholic Church prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul, asking that the risen Christ grant him eternal life in His kingdom. Amen.
