NAWOJ FCT Demands Action to End Menstrual Stigma,

Abuja – The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Federal Capital Territory chapter, has called for urgent action to tackle menstrual stigma and improve access to sanitary products for women and girls nationwide.

Marking this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day, the association urged stakeholders to step up awareness campaigns and treat menstrual health as a critical issue of dignity, education, and gender equality.

NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, Comrade Bassey Ita-Ikpang, highlighted that millions of women and girls, especially in underserved communities, face challenges linked to poor menstrual hygiene management.

“Menstruation is a natural process and should never be a source of shame or a barrier to education. No girl should miss school or be discriminated against because of her period,” she said.

The association called on governments, schools, healthcare providers, and community leaders to strengthen menstrual health education and make sanitary products affordable and accessible.

NAWOJ FCT reaffirmed its commitment to using the media to challenge cultural taboos and advocate policies that protect the health and dignity of women and girls.

World Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed globally every May 28, highlights that menstrual hygiene is not just a health issue but a matter of human rights, inclusion, and women’s empowerment.
