1. Faith Leaders Rally for Climate Justice, Inclusive Energy Transition in Nigeria
Faith-based organisations and Church leaders have intensified calls for stronger environmental responsibility and inclusive energy policies following a series of high-level engagements held this week in Nigeria.
On May 6, Board members of GreenFaith Africa visited the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria to explore partnerships aimed at advancing environmental care, climate justice and the protection of the earth.
The meeting underscored the growing importance of collaboration among religious bodies in tackling ecological challenges confronting communities across Africa.
Later that day, the Catholic Secretariat hosted the annual conference of Directors of Liturgy, bringing together Masters of Liturgical Ceremonies from dioceses nationwide to deliberate on strengthening the worship life of the Church in Nigeria.
Discussions at the gathering focused on the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), the Church’s process of guiding adults through faith formation, conversion and full integration into Christian life.
The environmental advocacy continued on May 7 during the GreenFaith Africa Conference organised in partnership with The Kukah Centre under the theme, “Faith, Justice, and Power: Advancing an Inclusive Just Energy Transition in Nigeria.”
Speakers at the conference stressed that the earth remains God’s gift entrusted to humanity’s care, insisting that development and technological progress must be balanced with stewardship, justice and environmental responsibility.
Participants maintained that Nigeria’s transition to cleaner energy must not only be technically effective but also socially inclusive and morally driven.
They further called on citizens to embrace practical environmental actions such as proper waste disposal, conservation of water, reduction of paper waste, tree protection, drainage clearing and prompt action against pollution.
Earlier in the week, attention also turned to Catholic Institute of West Africa in Port Harcourt, where the institution’s Governing Council meeting focused on enhancing theological education, pastoral renewal, research and service to the Church.
