NDC Convenes National Convention in Abuja Amid 2027 Political Realignments
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to hold its national convention in Abuja today as the party intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections.
National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, announced the convention yesterday, saying the gathering would mark a major turning point in the party’s growth and national political strategy.
Top on the agenda is the inauguration of a new National Executive Committee (NEC), which will oversee the party’s affairs and coordinate activities leading to the selection of its presidential candidate.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is widely believed to be the frontrunner for the party’s ticket, while former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, is being mentioned as a possible vice-presidential candidate in an emerging opposition alliance.
Party insiders said the convention would serve as a platform to consolidate the growing coalition within the opposition and formally cement ongoing political alignments ahead of the next election cycle.
In recent weeks, the NDC has attracted increasing attention following a series of high-level consultations, defections and alliance talks involving prominent opposition figures.
Sources within the party dismissed speculations that Kwankwaso was seeking the NDC presidential ticket, describing the reports as baseless rumours aimed at creating division within the opposition camp.
One party source described the convention as “historic,” noting that the level of interest and momentum surrounding the NDC had exceeded expectations.
“Our party has become the beautiful bride of Nigerian politics,” the source said, adding that many political actors were now identifying with the movement.
On claims that Kwankwaso was demanding the presidential ticket instead of accepting a vice-presidential role, party sources insisted that discussions on zoning and ticket arrangements had not yet begun.
