The President of the Catholic Men Organisation (CMO) of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Sir Onowu Paul Obi Ayaeze, has officially declared open the 2026 Lugbe Deanery CMO Soccer Championship themed, “Building Bonds of Brotherhood Through Football.”
Sir Ayaeze, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony held last Saturday at Super Tech FC Arena, ACO Estate, Airport Road, Abuja, delivered a goodwill message before performing the ceremonial kick-off to commence the tournament.
Describing the competition as an eye-opener for the Archdiocesan CMO, he expressed optimism that the tournament would strengthen unity among members and proceed peacefully.
“This tournament is going to be an eye-opener for us. I want to simply wish us all a healthy and fruitful competition. I’m here to observe and learn. This is my first time attending a men’s competition, and I pray that it will be hitch-free. There will be no injuries and no incidents in Jesus’ name,” he said.
In his opening remarks, Lugbe Deanery CMO President, Engr. Felix Okeke, explained that the football championship, which began two years ago under his predecessor, Chief Adebayo, was conceived as a unique initiative within the Archdiocese.
He noted that the theme of the competition was aimed at promoting unity and friendship among members.
“We are men of honour, and it is expected that we comport ourselves as such. Though there are prizes to be won, it should not become a do-or-die affair,” he stated.
Engr. Okeke also commended the organising committee for their dedication and hard work in ensuring the successful commencement of the tournament.
Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Brother Sunday Otori, JP, welcomed invited guests, parishioners, football enthusiasts and CMO members from different parishes across the deanery.
According to him, the tournament seeks to strengthen relationships among members, discover football talents, promote physical fitness and foster love and togetherness within the Church community.
He expressed appreciation to the Lugbe Deanery CMO Executive Council, spiritual leaders, sponsors, donors, parish coordinators and committee members for their support and sacrifices toward the success of the championship.
Brother Otori urged participating teams to uphold discipline, fairness and sportsmanship throughout the competition, stressing that the true victory lies in the unity and friendship built during the tournament.
Participants at the event applauded the Lugbe Deanery CMO Executive Council led by Engr. Okeke for sustaining the soccer championship initiative.
The tournament features 26 parish teams divided into six groups at the preliminary stage and is scheduled to conclude on June 28, 2026.
