Wike: True Leadership Demands Courage, Not Ambition

Abuja, June 1, 2026 — Speaking at his monthly media briefing in Abuja, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Wike, urged Nigerians to rethink the essence of leadership, stressing that it is defined by courage, responsibility, and service—not personal ambition.
“Leadership is not about comfort or prestige,” Wike said. “It is about confronting challenges directly and taking tough decisions, even when they are unpopular or difficult.”
He cautioned against the pursuit of high office for personal gain. “Wanting to be president is not enough. What matters is the ability to address the country’s challenges. A true leader does not shy away from problems or pass them off to others.”
Using the removal of fuel subsidies as an example, Wike highlighted the importance of making difficult decisions for the nation’s long-term benefit. “Yes, people experienced hardship, but it was necessary for progress. Leadership is measured by the courage to make such choices,” he said.
On party politics, the minister warned against factionalism, calling it detrimental to democracy. “A properly functioning political party has no factions. Divisions undermine the rule of law and the integrity of our political process,” he noted. He stressed that court decisions must be respected and that repeated legal challenges reveal a lack of understanding of governance.
Wike also underscored respect for senior leaders and former presidents. “Experience, age, and proper procedures must be respected in Nigerian politics. Ambitions should be formally declared, not assumed in secret. Decisions must follow the law, not convenience,” he said.
He concluded with a call for principled leadership: “A leader identifies problems, finds solutions, and takes responsibility. Leadership is not about comfort or shortcuts—it is about courage, vision, and serving the nation.
