Tinubu approves massive salary boost for military personnel, junior ranks to get 80% increase

President Bola Tinubu has approved a major salary adjustment for Nigerian Armed Forces personnel, with pay increases ranging from 30 per cent to 80 per cent as part of efforts to improve the welfare and morale of troops.

The new salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit about 250,000 officers and soldiers across the country.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, senior officers above the rank of Colonel will receive a 30 per cent increase, while personnel from Colonel to Warrant Officer ranks will get a 50 per cent boost.

Junior military personnel from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest increase of 80 per cent.

The review will increase the Federal Government’s annual military wage bill from N660 billion to N924 billion, adding about N264 billion to personnel costs yearly.

President Tinubu said the decision was in recognition of the sacrifices of service members who continue to defend the nation against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats.

He assured troops of his administration’s commitment to improving their welfare, providing modern equipment and strengthening the capacity of the Armed Forces.

“Those who keep Nigerians safe must be supported and appreciated for the sacrifices they make in the service of the nation,” the President said.

The latest adjustment comes amid ongoing military operations nationwide and represents one of the biggest reviews of military remuneration in recent years.
