Preserving Human Voices and Faces”: Catholic Secretariat Calls for Truthful and Responsible Communication in Nigeria
Abuja, Nigeria – In a powerful welcome address at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) for this year’s World Communications Day, Secretary General Fr. Michael Banjo urged Nigerians, especially members of the press, to place human dignity at the heart of communication.
Fr. Banjo, addressing journalists and dignitaries, emphasized the Holy Father’s theme for the day, “Preserving Human Voices and Faces,” as particularly relevant for Nigeria’s current challenges, including insecurity, political tension, economic hardship, and social mistrust.
“Behind every message is a person, behind every story is a face, and behind every voice is a life that must not be ignored, mocked, or wounded,” he said, calling for verification of information before sharing, speaking without hatred, and humanizing victims of poverty and insecurity.
Highlighting the critical role of the media ahead of Nigeria’s elections, Fr. Banjo stressed that journalism must protect truth, resist sensationalism, and help citizens vote with conscience rather than fear or propaganda. He called on electoral authorities to ensure transparency and integrity in all processes, noting that “every voter must count, every vote must count, and every result must reflect the true voice of the people.”
Beyond politics, the Secretary General applauded government efforts against terrorism, infrastructure development in Ogun and Ekiti States, and initiatives to improve national security, while reminding leaders that progress must translate into tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians.
Fr. Banjo also took a moment to recognize the National Director of Social Communications, celebrating his birthday alongside World Communications Day. He encouraged all to “speak truth without hatred, listen without prejudice, and use every platform entrusted to us in the service of God and humanity.”
The message resonated strongly with the press, reinforcing the Catholic Church’s call for responsible communication, national cohesion, and human-centered development.
