Only God’ is my godfather,Fubara Declares in Rivers Guber Race

The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Rivers State, Blessing Fubara, says he is not backed by any political godfather, insisting that his only support is God.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Friday night, Fubara said his political ambition is driven by personal conviction and not influenced by godfatherism or external political control.

He also distanced his political stance from that of his brother, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, saying they both hold different political ideologies.

“I don’t have a godfather, but I have God the Father,” he said. “If my ambition were based on what you are suggesting, it would mean I have no clear vision or direction for what I am doing.”

Fubara dismissed claims that his governorship ambition is an extension of his brother’s political structure or that he is being positioned as a placeholder.

“My brother, Nigerians, and the world at large saw what happened between him and his party. We have different political ideologies and individual perspectives,” he added.

He described the political atmosphere in Rivers State as tense, saying different narratives were being circulated to shape public perception.

“It is a trying moment for us in Rivers State. There are many narratives being pushed to set a perspective for people to follow, but we remain focused. Our eyes are on the goal of rescuing Rivers State,” he said.

Donblaze Online reports that Fubara formally entered the 2027 governorship race in May 2026 after obtaining the Nigeria Democratic Congress nomination and expression of interest forms.

His entry comes amid ongoing political tension in Rivers State, marked by the prolonged rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), involving party disputes, legislative divisions, and court cases.

Governor Fubara had recently withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries, shortly before Blessing Fubara declared his own candidacy.
