Obi Optimistic About Credible 2027 Elections, Hashim Faults INEC Timetable
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed confidence that Nigeria will witness free, fair and credible elections in 2027 despite rising political tensions across the country.
Speaking at the convention of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Abuja, Obi blamed the nation’s economic hardship on years of corruption and poor leadership, insisting that Nigeria had been “looted into poverty.” He called for responsible leadership, job creation and a transition from a consumption-based economy to a production-driven system.
Obi also defended his decision to join the NDC, saying his political actions were guided by principle and a commitment to rebuilding Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Meanwhile, former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim criticised the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it as unlawful and capable of creating tension within political parties.
Hashim argued that the compressed schedule would not give political parties enough time to conduct proper primaries and warned that political activities planned around Hajj and Ileya periods could worsen security and logistical challenges.
