NOUN MOURNS AS BANDITS KILL UNIVERSITY DON IN ZAMFARA
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is mourning the tragic death of one of its senior academics, Late Mallam Nasir Gusau, who was killed by suspected bandits in Zamfara State.
Gusau, a lecturer and former university administrator, was reportedly shot dead while returning from Gusau on Sunday, September 6, 2026, according to a statement issued by the institution’s Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Aderayo Ajayi.
The statement described the late academic as a “distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family,” noting that his death had created a deep sense of loss within the university community.
According to reports, the incident occurred along the Gusau–Funtua Highway in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, where the attackers allegedly opened fire on the vehicle conveying him.
The university expressed sadness over the development, offering condolences to Gusau’s immediate family, friends, colleagues and associates while praying for strength to bear the painful loss.
Gusau’s funeral prayer was held according to Islamic rites at about 6:00pm on Sunday, after which he was laid to rest.
The killing adds to growing concerns over insecurity along major highways in parts of the country, with communities and travellers continuing to face threats from criminal elements.
Security agencies are expected to intensify efforts to track down those responsible and bring them to justice.
