Maj. Gen. EI Okoro takes over as  GOC 6 Division,

Maj. Gen. EI Okoro has been appointed as the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division of the Nigerian Army, as well as the Land Component Commander of Operation DELTA SAFE, in a major leadership reshuffle approved by the military authorities.

He takes over responsibility for one of the Army’s most strategic operational commands, which oversees security operations in Nigeria’s oil-rich South-South region. The 6 Division plays a critical role in combating oil theft, pipeline vandalism, kidnapping, and other forms of criminal activity affecting the Niger Delta economy.

In his new dual role, Maj. Gen. Okoro will also coordinate land-based military operations under Operation DELTA SAFE, a joint task force mandate designed to stabilize the region, protect critical national assets, and support civil authorities in maintaining peace and order.

The appointment comes as part of a broader redeployment of senior officers across divisions, brigades, training institutions, and defence formations. The shake-up was approved by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, and is aimed at improving operational efficiency, strengthening command structures, and enhancing the Army’s response to emerging security threats.

As GOC 6 Division, Maj. Gen. Okoro is expected to oversee troop deployment, intelligence-led operations, and coordination with other security agencies operating in the Niger Delta. His leadership will be central to ongoing efforts to curb crude oil theft and dismantle illegal refining networks, which have long posed economic and environmental challenges in the region.

The Nigerian Army has emphasized that the newly appointed commanders are expected to demonstrate professionalism, innovation, and strong leadership in executing their duties, while also maintaining synergy with other security formations and civil authorities.

The restructuring reflects the Army’s continued focus on strengthening command effectiveness and ensuring a more responsive and combat-ready force across all theatres of operation.
