ICPC sensitises inec officials on corruption-free elections ahead of 2027 polls

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has begun a two-day anti-corruption sensitisation programme for officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), aimed at promoting transparency and integrity ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

The workshop, held at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, is themed “Corruption-Free Election: Integrity Matters (C-FEIM)” and is focused on strengthening ethical conduct, accountability and corruption prevention among electoral officers.

Representing INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, National Commissioner Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, described the initiative as a significant step towards consolidating Nigeria’s democratic process.

Amupitan said INEC’s responsibility goes beyond conducting elections, adding that the commission must also contribute to shaping values that promote credible elections and public trust in democratic institutions.

He commended ICPC for organising the programme, noting that it would help deepen the understanding of integrity principles among electoral officials.

In his remarks, ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, represented by the Director of Legal Services, Mr. Henry Emore, said the commission remains committed to tackling corruption, which he described as a major obstacle to national development and democratic stability.

He explained that the workshop was part of ICPC’s efforts to support initiatives that guarantee free, fair, transparent and credible elections in Nigeria.

The training featured presentations by experts on critical issues affecting the electoral process, including conflict of interest, ethical leadership, accountability and institutional reforms.

Director of Public Enlightenment and Education at ICPC, Demola Bakare, while speaking on “Conflict of Interest in Nigeria’s Electoral Process: The Pitfalls to Avoid,” highlighted possible ethical challenges in election management and recommended measures to protect institutional integrity.

Similarly, Deputy Director of Operations, Susan Enada Ogabidu, in her presentation titled “Embracing Integrity for a Corruption-Free Election,” stressed the importance of transparency, accountability and compliance with anti-corruption regulations.

Other sessions focused on corruption prevention measures and value orientation among public servants, with participants urged to uphold professionalism, place national interest above personal gain and maintain the highest standards of integrity.

The ICPC said the programme forms part of its continuous efforts to strengthen public institutions and create an environment for peaceful, credible and transparent elections ahead of the 2027 polls.
