Bishop Gerald Musa urges society to value truth, dignity, and authentic connection in the digital era
Bishop Gerald Mamman Musa of the Katrina Diocese reminded Nigerians  that real voices and real faces matter more than ever. Speaking at the press conference for the 2026 World Communication Day at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), he sounded a wake-up call against facelessness and fake realities.
“Never have we spoken so much, yet truly listened so little,” the Bishop said. “We have thousands of online followers, but very few genuine face-to-face encounters.” He warned that while technology can create artificial voices and images, it cannot replace the dignity, identity, and sacredness of real human connection.
Citing Pope Leo XIV, Bishop Musa described human voices and faces as sacred reflections of God’s love. He pointed to a troubling digital reality: cybercriminals, trolls, and manipulators hide behind fake accounts, spreading lies while the vulnerable remain unheard.
The Bishop challenged society to lift up the voiceless. The poor, displaced, persecuted minorities, and victims of violence must not only be talked about—they must be allowed to speak for themselves. “True justice begins when the voiceless are no longer invisible,” he said.
Philosophers and Scripture reinforce his message. Emmanuel Levinas teaches that the human face is an ethical call, while Martin Buber’s “I-Thou” relationship reminds us to treat people as persons, not objects. Biblical stories, like Bartimaeus shouting for Jesus despite societal silence, illustrate the courage it takes to reclaim one’s voice.
Bishop Musa concluded with a call to action: prioritize authentic human connection over filters, likes, and digital applause. He urged young people to value their real identity and divine worth over virtual validation. “May our voices remain truthful, our faces reflect God’s beauty, and future generations inherit not just smarter machines, but kinder, more humane societies,” he prayed.
In a world obsessed with screens, the Bishop reminded everyone: being human means being seen, being heard, and standing courageously for truth.
