Tinubu tasks inec, security agencies on peaceful, credible osun governorship poll
President Bola Tinubu has charged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible governorship election in Osun State.
The election, scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2026, will see 15 candidates compete for the state’s top political seat, including incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, All Progressives Congress (APC) flagbearer Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, and African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Najeem Salaam.
In a statement released on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President urged INEC to safeguard the credibility of the electoral process by ensuring a free, fair, and orderly election.
Tinubu said the poll provides an opportunity for INEC to prove its preparedness for the 2027 general elections, describing the exercise as a major test of the commission’s capacity to deliver credible elections.
“INEC must use this last off-cycle election as a test case to demonstrate to Nigerians their full preparedness for the 2027 polls,” the President stated.
He also directed the Inspector-General of Police and heads of other security agencies involved in the election to ensure adequate security for voters, electoral officers, and other stakeholders throughout the exercise.
The President called on all participants to support a peaceful process and respect the outcome of the election as Osun residents prepare to choose their next governor.
