Sanusi Alleges Tough Bail Conditions for El-Rufai Amid ICPC Case

The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has claimed that former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, is facing strict bail conditions while in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

El-Rufai has reportedly been held since February 19 over allegations linked to financial misconduct during his tenure as governor of Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023. He was later arraigned on April 13 at the Kaduna State High Court on a nine-count amended charge involving fraud and abuse of office allegations.

Speaking at a public event, Sanusi alleged that the conditions attached to El-Rufai’s bail include the requirement for an emir and a senior government official to stand as sureties, describing the terms as unusually stringent.

In a related development, the el-Rufai Support Group Association (ERSGA) said it has engaged a U.S.-based advocacy firm, Vanguard Africa, to mount an international awareness campaign on the ongoing legal proceedings, engaging policymakers and democracy stakeholders abroad.
