NUJ FCT Chairman tasks FCTA Chapel executives on unity, welfare, professionalism
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has called on the newly inaugurated executive of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Chapel to promote unity, protect members’ welfare and uphold professionalism throughout its tenure.
Ike made the call on Friday in Abuja during the inauguration of the newly elected Chapel executive, urging the new leadership to run an inclusive administration where every member would be carried along.
Represented by the Council Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, the NUJ FCT Chairman described the election of the new executive as a demonstration of members’ confidence and a reminder of the responsibility attached to leadership.
She emphasised that leadership in the union goes beyond occupying positions, stressing that it requires commitment to service, accountability and the protection of journalists’ professional interests.
“Leadership in the NUJ is about service, responsibility and strengthening the bond among members. Every journalist must feel valued and represented,” Ike said.
She urged the new executive to avoid division and ensure that personal disagreements do not overshadow the collective goals of the Chapel.
According to her, differences of opinion are expected in any organisation, but such issues must be resolved through dialogue, consultation and the established structures of the union.
“We may disagree, but we must not become divided. Our shared responsibility as journalists and members of the same union is greater than the issues that separate us,” she stated.
Ike also called on members of the FCTA Chapel to support the new leadership, while encouraging them to hold their leaders accountable through constructive engagement.
She described the Chapel as an important part of the NUJ FCT Council with a rich history, urging members to work together to preserve its reputation and strengthen its institutions.
“The election is over; the real work of building a stronger, united and progressive FCTA Chapel has started,” she added.
At the election, the incumbent Chairman, Comrade Ngozi Uloma Ufomba, was returned for another term.
Other elected officers include Amechi Paul Obiora as Vice Chairman, Mbanugo Innocent as Treasurer, Elaigwu Abigail Ngohile as Assistant Secretary and Madugu Hauwa Mahmud as Auditor.
The positions of Secretary and Financial Secretary will be filled through a bye-election in accordance with the NUJ Constitution.
In her acceptance speech, Ufomba pledged to prioritise professional development, improve members’ welfare and pursue initiatives that would enhance the effectiveness of the Chapel.
She promised to provide more training opportunities for journalists, ensure prompt payment of welfare benefits, work towards acquiring a union bus and strengthen awareness on issues affecting the FCT and the journalism profession.
Ufomba urged her fellow contestants and all members to put the election behind them and join hands in advancing the Chapel.
“My door will remain open to all. This administration will be inclusive, transparent and accountable,” she said.
She assured members of her commitment to serve with humility, integrity and dedication, stressing that the progress of the Chapel depends on the collective support and cooperation of everyone.
