NBC Issues Stern Warning to Broadcasters Over Code Violations Ahead of 2027 Elections
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a formal notice to all broadcasters across Nigeria, warning against persistent breaches of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code in news, current affairs, and political programmes as the country moves closer to the 2027 general elections.
In a press release dated April 17, 2026, the Commission expressed concern over what it described as a sustained increase in violations of the 6th Edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, particularly in areas relating to fairness, balance, accuracy, hate speech, and respect for constitutional institutions.
According to the NBC, broadcast platforms are increasingly being used in ways that deviate from their core responsibility of informing the public with professionalism, neutrality, and factual accuracy.
The Commission specifically highlighted a growing crisis in anchor and presenter professionalism, noting that some broadcasters have allowed presenters to inject personal opinions into programmes, contrary to established ethical standards.
Citing relevant sections of the Broadcasting Code, the NBC stressed that presenters must not express personal opinions as facts during programmes and must ensure that all sides of issues of public interest are equitably represented.
The Commission also raised alarm over what it described as the misuse of broadcast platforms by political actors, accusing some individuals and groups of using the media to spread divisive, inflammatory, and potentially inciting content.
It warned that materials capable of promoting hate speech, public disorder, attacks on constituted authority, or undermining national unity would no longer be tolerated.
The NBC further stated that any anchor or presenter found guilty of expressing personal opinions as facts, intimidating guests, denying fair hearing to opposing views, or compromising neutrality would be deemed to have committed a Class B breach, which may attract regulatory sanctions.
Reaffirming its position, the Commission emphasized that editorial responsibility remains solely with broadcasters, even during live programmes, and cannot be shifted to guests or political commentators.
The statement concluded with a strong reminder that strict compliance with the Nigeria Broadcasting Code is mandatory, stressing that the airwaves must not be used to amplify tension or spread misinformation during the sensitive pre-election period.
“As Nigeria enters a critical electoral period, the airwaves must remain platforms for credible information, responsible discourse, and national cohesion,” the Commission stated.
The NBC assured Nigerians that it would continue to safeguard the public’s right to quality broadcasting while enforcing sanctions against any broadcaster found in violation of the Code.
