The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Ikeje Asogwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election, held on Saturday, June 20, 2026.
Announcing the result at the collation centre, the Returning Officer, Prof. Christian Ezeibe of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, said Asogwa emerged victorious after polling a wide margin over his opponents across the six local government areas that make up the senatorial district.
According to the official declaration, Asogwa secured 162,360 votes, while his closest challenger, Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), polled 9,299 votes. Other political parties, including the Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), NDC, and PRP, recorded significantly lower votes.
The by-election was conducted to fill the vacant seat in the Senate following the death of the former senator representing the district, Okey Ezea, in 2025. Security agencies, electoral officials, and party agents were deployed across polling units to ensure a relatively peaceful exercise, with reports of voter turnout varying across communities in the district.
INEC described the process as largely peaceful and orderly, with results from the wards and local governments being collated before the final announcement at the senatorial collation centre.
In his acceptance remarks, Asogwa thanked the electorate for their overwhelming support, commending party loyalists and stakeholders for what he described as a well-coordinated campaign effort. He also pledged to prioritise development, effective representation, and the interests of the senatorial district when sworn into the National Assembly.
