Atiku Faults Tinubu’s Pension Backlog Remarks,

The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent comments on the Federal Government’s pension backlog, describing them as a needless political distraction and an attempt to shift attention from the challenges confronting Nigerians.

Atiku, in a statement, criticised what he termed “unnecessary ghosting and futile political shadow chasing” by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration, insisting that Nigerians expect solutions to pressing national issues rather than political blame games.

The former Vice President said the issue of pension arrears requires urgent government intervention, transparency, and a clear commitment to ensuring that retired workers receive their legitimate entitlements after years of service to the nation.

He accused the Tinubu administration of failing to adequately address major concerns affecting citizens, including the rising cost of living, economic hardship, unemployment, and insecurity, while allegedly focusing on narratives aimed at deflecting public attention.

Atiku maintained that the true measure of governance is the ability to improve the lives of citizens through effective policies and accountable leadership, stressing that Nigerians are more interested in results than political arguments.

He urged the Federal Government to prioritise the welfare of pensioners and the general population by implementing practical measures that would restore confidence and provide relief to millions of Nigerians.

The pension backlog controversy has continued to attract reactions from political actors, with the government and opposition parties exchanging views over responsibility for outstanding payments and the best approach to resolving the issue.
