The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has assured residents of the Apo-Karshi axis that the long-abandoned 13.5-kilometre road project will be completed and delivered by November, ending years of hardship and traffic congestion experienced by commuters.
Wike gave the assurance on Saturday during an inspection visit to the Apo-Karshi road project and the ongoing 14-kilometre Bwari-Kubwa road construction in Abuja.
The minister said the Apo-Karshi road, which was awarded in 2010 under previous administrations, was among the inherited projects that suffered prolonged delays, leaving residents and motorists frustrated for over a decade.
He explained that the FCT Administration had to terminate the previous contract and re-award the project to SCC Nigeria Ltd., following concerns over slow progress and the need to deliver the critical infrastructure to the people.
“The Apo-Karshi road has been a topical issue. It was awarded in 2010, one of the projects inherited by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Because of its importance and the complaints by residents, we had to terminate the contract and award it to SCC, which has the capacity to complete the job,” Wike stated.
The minister commended the contractor for maintaining steady progress on site despite funding challenges, assuring that the government would continue to honour its financial commitments to ensure timely completion.
While inspecting the Bwari-Kubwa road project, Wike disclosed that the contractor had promised to deliver the 14-kilometre road by December.
He stressed that infrastructure development remains one of the strongest indicators of good governance, noting that completed projects serve as evidence of government’s commitment to improving the lives of citizens.
“When people ask me about campaigns, I say, what is campaign? See the campaign. Campaign is about what you have done for the people and what the government has to show. It is not about promises; it is about taking action that positively impacts lives,” he said.
Wike added that the projects align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, expressing confidence that the FCT would surpass its target of completing and inaugurating at least 10 major projects between December 2026 and January 2027.
He noted that several road networks and other infrastructure projects across the territory are nearing completion, signalling a new phase of development in the nation’s capital.
