Gwagwalada Council Steps Up Drainage Clearing Exercise as Chairman Calls for Unity After Court Victory
Residents of Gwagwalada Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory have welcomed the council’s renewed efforts to evacuate refuse and debris from blocked drainage channels, describing the initiative as a timely intervention to reduce the risk of flooding during the ongoing rainy season.
The residents commended the council’s proactive approach, noting that the removal of waste from waterways would improve water flow, protect communities from flood-related challenges, and help preserve infrastructure, particularly newly reconstructed roads that could be damaged by erosion and uncontrolled water overflow.
However, they appealed to the council authorities to expand the drainage clearing exercise beyond the current locations and extend it to more communities within the Area Council. According to them, sustained cleaning of drainages across the area would go a long way in preventing road failures, protecting public facilities, and ensuring a safer environment for residents.
Meanwhile, Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Alhaji Kassim Muhammad, has extended a hand of fellowship to his political opponents following his victory at the Court of Appeal, which affirmed his position as chairman after the legal contest over the council chairmanship election.
Speaking shortly after the court judgment, Alhaji Muhammad called on all political stakeholders, supporters, and residents of Gwagwalada to put the election disputes behind them and join forces towards advancing the development of the Area Council.
The chairman stressed that the electoral process and subsequent legal proceedings had come to an end, adding that the priority of his administration would now be focused on delivering meaningful development, improving public services, and providing the dividends of democracy to the people.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, peace, unity, and sustainable development, assuring residents that every citizen, regardless of political affiliation, remains an important stakeholder in the collective effort to build a more prosperous and peaceful Gwagwalada.
Clean waterways, safer communities, and a renewed commitment to development remain the council’s focus as the rainy season continues.
