South Africa Captain Appeals for Pan-African Support After World Cup Loss
South Africa’s goalkeeper and captain, Rownen Williams, expressed disappointment over the lack of African support for his team during their 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
🗣️ Rownen Williams:
“Africans have always supported other African countries in every World Cup, but I can’t understand why our situation is different. Many Africans supported Mexico instead of South Africa. We almost shed tears. Truly, this is sad. As Africans, let’s stand for each other and stand together.”
Williams’ message highlights the importance of continental unity and backing African teams on the global stage.
The game, however, will be remembered for disciplinary drama. South Africa’s captain and goalkeeper Rownen Williams saw teammates Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane sent off early, while Mexico’s Cesar Montes received a late red card. Mexico dominated possession with 61% and created multiple scoring chances, while South Africa managed only 39% possession and two shots on target.
