Fg launches university innovation hub, targets manufacturing boom
The Federal Government has unveiled Nigeria’s first Manu-Tech University Innovation Pod, setting the stage for a new era where universities will serve as engines of industrial development, technology advancement and enterprise creation.
The innovation facility, launched at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, is aimed at bridging the gap between academic research and manufacturing by connecting students, researchers, investors and industry players to develop commercially viable products and solutions.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said Nigerian universities must move beyond producing graduates and research papers to becoming active contributors to national development through innovation, entrepreneurship and industrialisation.
Alausa said the initiative would support critical sectors including artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, agro-processing, industrial automation and technology-driven businesses.
He explained that the project would also leverage the industrial capacity of the Aba manufacturing cluster by creating stronger partnerships between universities and businesses to promote local production and economic growth.
The Minister disclosed that the Manu-Tech Innovation Pod is part of the Federal Government’s wider reforms to strengthen STEM education, technical and vocational training, research commercialisation and youth empowerment.
He added that similar innovation hubs would be established across the country’s geopolitical zones as part of efforts to accelerate industrial growth, create employment opportunities and support Nigeria’s ambition of achieving a one trillion-dollar economy.
The launch marks a major step in government’s plan to reposition higher institutions from centres of learning alone into productive hubs where ideas are transformed into industries, businesses and solutions to national challenges.
