Army General Dies in Bandits’ Captivity After Weeks of Abduction
Former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (rtd), has died while in the custody of bandits in Katsina State, weeks after he was abducted.
The Katsina State Government confirmed the development on Saturday in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, describing the incident as a deeply tragic loss to both the state and the nation.
According to the statement, the retired senior military officer was kidnapped by armed bandits in Katsina and remained in captivity for several weeks despite ongoing efforts by the state government and relevant security agencies to secure his release. Authorities said “relentless and concerted” operations were carried out during the period in an attempt to rescue him safely.
However, the efforts ended in tragedy as the former defence spokesman reportedly died in captivity. The government disclosed that he suffered complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held by his abductors.
The statement further noted that the circumstances surrounding his death underscore the worsening security challenges in parts of the state, particularly banditry, which has continued to claim lives and disrupt communities.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the incident as a “dark moment” for Katsina State, stressing that it highlights the urgent need for stronger collaboration between state and federal security agencies to combat armed groups operating in the region.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to intensifying efforts to dismantle criminal networks and ensure that those responsible for the abduction and death are brought to justice.
The state government also extended condolences to the family of the late Major General, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and assuring them of its support during the difficult period.
The death of the retired military officer has sparked renewed concern over the safety of high-profile individuals and the continuing threat of kidnapping for ransom in parts of northern Nigeria.
