Anambra Police Arrests Pastor Over Alleged Multiple Marriages, Wife-Swapping Claims
The Anambra State Government has confirmed the arrest of a pastor accused of allegedly marrying multiple women from his congregation and coercing members into controversial marital arrangements, including reported wife-swapping practices.
The cleric, identified as Harrison Charles, founder of Day Spring Assembly in Awada, Onitsha, was arrested by operatives of the state security outfit, Agunechemba Security Outfit, after allegations against him surfaced in a viral video. He has since been handed over to the police for investigation.
According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Dr. Ejimofor Opara, the operation is part of the government’s ongoing crackdown on individuals suspected of using religious institutions for exploitation and other unlawful activities.
Opara said the pastor is currently being investigated in collaboration with the police, stressing that the allegations remain unproven at this stage.
He is accused by some members of his church of persuading married women to leave their husbands and join him as wives, with claims that as many as 75 women may be involved. He is also alleged to have encouraged wife-swapping among congregants.
Authorities further stated that 11 babies were reportedly found at his residence during the arrest operation. The pastor is said to have claimed the children as his own and reportedly admitted uncertainty about the total number of his wives and children.
Officials emphasized that no court has established guilt, and investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances and possible legal breaches.
