Armed with Stories, Not Guns: Journalists Fight Child Recruitment
Abuja’s journalists are taking a stand—arming themselves not with guns, but with the power of the pen—to stop children from being pulled into armed conflicts.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, teamed up with the Dallaire Institute for Children, Peace and Security and Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) for a hard-hitting multi-day workshop. Reporters, diplomats, and development partners gathered to master ethical, child-focused conflict reporting.
For NUJ FCT, it’s simple: reporting isn’t just about documenting—it’s about preventing. Council Treasurer Sandra Chukwugekwu said, “We shape public awareness, influence policy, and hold institutions accountable. Telling accurate, sensitive stories protects children and blocks recruitment pipelines.”
She slammed sensationalism, urging journalists to tackle the real drivers: poverty, broken families, lack of education, and social exclusion. Coordinated action with government, security, civil society, and media, she said, is key to protecting kids and ensuring rehabilitation.
Dallaire Institute’s Offiong Nsa called journalists “frontline human rights defenders,” adding, “Ethical reporting exposes recruitment networks and shows children as victims, not perpetrators.”
JHR Africa’s Mustapha Dumbuya focused on the workshop’s practical edge: reporting safely in conflict zones, digital responsibility, and human rights accountability.
Canadian High Commissioner’s rep Omar Alihashi tied it to the Vancouver Principles, stressing global support for ethical reporting to protect kids in conflict.
The sessions continue, covering trauma-informed journalism, gender-sensitive coverage, and digital ethics—all part of a bigger push to make the media a frontline shield against child exploitation.
