2027 BATTLELINES: Gov Sule Backs Wada for Nasarawa Top Job, Breaks Ranks with Al-Makura

A major political rift has opened in Nasarawa State ahead of the 2027 governorship race as Governor Abdullahi Sule publicly endorsed Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada as his preferred successor under the APC, distancing himself from his political predecessor, Tanko Al-Makura.
Speaking on Sunday Politics on Channels Television, Governor Sule declared that Wadada remains “the best option,” citing his business acumen and capacity to sustain his administration’s legacy.
“I believe Senator Wadada is a very business-minded individual who can continue from where I will stop,” the governor said, signaling a clear direction for succession politics within the ruling party in the state.
In a blunt response to questions about sidelining Al-Makura’s influence, Sule dismissed claims of political indebtedness to the former governor. He maintained that while Al-Makura supported his emergence, he was never under his control.
“He was not my godfather. He supported me during my campaign, and I have appreciated him enough. I don’t owe him anything,” Sule stated firmly.
The governor further stressed that no individual holds the authority to dictate his successor, adding that attempts to reconcile positions with Al-Makura over the succession issue had failed.
According to Sule, it was after those efforts proved abortive that he decided to openly declare his support for Wadada.
He also clarified that Wadada had already made political moves toward the APC, revealing that the senator resigned from his SDP ward in Keffi in 2025 ahead of aligning with the ruling party.
Governor Sule pledged full backing for Wadada’s ambition, setting the stage for an intense political showdown within Nasarawa’s APC as the 2027 election draws closer.
